Chapter twenty-three

There was so much going on at once, I didn’t know what to pay attention to.

Wolfric began to float in the background, rising a few feet up into the air as he started to cackle, his eyes glowing even brighter.

He was possessed by the Chaos magic, and whatever it was doing to him had made him incredibly powerful.

I watched the four guards' eyes flash purple, too, realizing that they as well were Chaos magic infused.

Hurriedly I shot off a fireball, the streaming blast of fury zipping toward the four men who scattered instantly.

The fireball landed in the middle and sent a cloud of dirt up into the sky but killed none of the men.

These were no slouches.

Each of them drew a slim black sword in unison, but I watched as the blades suddenly began to glow purple, the slim things like rapiers as the purple wisps poured off of them.

I gripped my sword with two hands and readied myself for the oncoming battle as the men lurched forward.

Their movements were jerky and strange, almost as if they were puppets controlled by an invisible hand that moved them around unnaturally.

The first of them came up to me, his lips curling back to reveal blackened teeth as the man–no, scratch that, thing–hissed and sliced at me with his blade.

Whatever this was, he didn’t seem fully human.

I caught the sword on mine, sparks flying, and flames bursting out as our swords connected.

The magic blades duel for supremacy, and I knew I didn’t have long to wait.

The other men were two steps behind the first, and they would surround me in a moment if I didn’t do something.

Suddenly I heard thundering hooves behind me, and threw my head over my shoulder to find Serena racing forward, her eyes lighting up green as she went.

She leapt from her horse, gracefully spinning through the air before landing on a knee and popping back up.

She was saying spells of some kind, an ancient language unintelligible to my ears, that nonetheless filled me with power that felt incredible.

I felt as strong as an ox, and pushed forward with my muscles to throw the first Chaos knight off balance.

The thing tipped backwards, letting out an inhuman grunt as I swirled and caught the blade of the next knight.

My sword's flame flared and singed the skin of the man, but I saw no reaction.

It was like the man was a zombie or something, completely impervious to anything.

With a start, I realized he was.

His head was cocked at an unnatural angle, and I realized that the only thing keeping him upright was the Chaos magic flowing through the corpse's body.

The smell was unbelievable, making me wrinkle my nose.

Even though he was dead, he still had plenty of strength.

The thing let out a wispy moan as its sword came down again, and the second knight approached me from the side.

A flash of red hair burst across the scene, a silver knife flashing through the night and jamming deep into the Chaos knight's neck.
